FIRST INTERNATIONAL CONDUCTING COMPETITION

OPERA NICE COTE D’AZUR 

The Opéra de Nice, in cooperation with Studiomusica International Management and the Conservatorie of Nice, announces the first edition of « OPERA NICE COTE D’AZUR CONDUCTING COMPETITION ».

The competition aims to offer a real career opportunity to emerging orchestra conductors and is open to musicians of any nationality without age limits. The competition will be held in Nice from September the 4th until September the 16th 2018. The candidates will be selected through the examination of videos and CVs from March the 1st until July the 15th 2018.

1. REGULATION

1.1 The competition is structured in two main phases: ELIMINATORY and ROUNDS. The ELIMINATORY PHASE begins March the 1st and finishes July the 15th 2018. The jury of the ELIMINATORY PHASE will judge the candidates through videos and cv’s. The next phases will  be held in Nice from September the 4th until September the 16th 2018.

1.2 Conductors from any nationality can participate, without any age limit
1.3 The participants that have been students or have worked as assistants with one or more of the members of the jury will not be voted by the jury member with whom they have studied or worked with.

2. COMPETITION STRUCTURE

 2.1 ELIMINATORY PHASE
– Starting date for sending applications: March the 1st 2018. Deadline for sending the applications: July the 15th 2018;
In order to register, the competitors have to send their application form by email. The candidates are requested to send links to videos of two contrasting character pieces ;

2.2. VIDEO DETAILS
– The Videos aim to illustrate to the jury the candidate’s skills and technique and will be examined together with the CV’s in order to have the most accurate opinion on candidate’s abilities ;
– Candidate’s have to link TWO videos of a rehearsal or a concert where two contrasting character pieces (for example one Allegro and one Adagio) from any historical period performed ;
– Two contrasting movements of the same piece are allowed ;
Videos must have the following features:
– Each video has to last at least 7 minutes ;
– Each video can be part of a longer one but must not be edited; only change of frame is allowed as long as at least 3 minutes of the frame is filmed with frontal view ;
– Videos must be played in streaming mode (videos don’t have to be downloaded) ;
– Videos can be private or public as long as they can be seen by the entire jury without any restrictions ;
– Candidates must send one link for each video;
–  No specific streaming platform is required, any of the most common are permitted (for example Youtube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Youku etc.) however the video should be played by an ordinary computer running a Windows or a Mac system ;
– The jury will evaluate each video with the maximum care and for the time required for a correct evaluation ;

2.3 CANDIDATES ADMITTED TO THE FIRST ROUND
– The admitted candidates will be informed by email within July the 15th 2018 and the admitted candidates’ names will also be published on the website;
– Only a maximum of 60 candidates are admitted to the first round ;
– The First Round and the following phases will be held in Nice from September the 4th until September the 16th 2018  ;

2.4 FIRST ROUND – PIANO 4 HANDS 
Tuesday the 4th and Wednesday the 5th September 2018
– Only a maximum of 60 candidates are admitted to participate to the first round ;
The names of the candidates admitted to the next phase will be published before the end of the second day (by midnight) ;

First round repertoire
– L. van Beethoven : Simphony n° 1 in C Major op. 21 ;
Each candidate will have a maximum of 15 minutes to perform ;

2.5 SECOND ROUND – SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Thursday the 6th and Friday the 7th September 2018
– Only a maximum of 30 candidates will be admitted to the second round ;

Second round repertoire:
– A. Dvorak : Simphony n° 9 « New World »
– F. Schubert : Simphony n ° 8, « Unfinished »

– Each candidate will have a maximum of 15 minutes to perform. The names of the candidates admitted to the next phase will be published before the end of the second day (by midnight) ;

2.6 FINAL PHASE: WORKSHOP WITH M° GYÖRGY G. RÁTH AND THE ORCHESTRE PHILHARMONIQUE DE NICE
From Saturday September the 8th until Thursday September the 13th 2018
– Only a maximum of 8 candidates will be admitted to the workshop ;

This phase aims to prepare the candidates to the final stages of the competition, it is not subject to voting however aims to ensure that each candidate is well prepaired to perform the repertoire of the Semifinal and Final ;

Those admitted to the final stage of the competition are offered a daily allowance of € 80 to cover the costs of stay.

2.7 SEMIFINAL – SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Saturday September the 15th 2018
– The same people admitted to the workshop will participate to the Semifinal ;

– Candidates that didn’t pass the previous phases will have free access to attend the semi-final as public;

2.8 FINAL – SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Sunday September the 16th 2018

– Only a maximum of 3 candidates will be admitted to the final. Each candidate will be assigned a repertoire group and will have 60 minutes to rehearse for the final where the candidate will perform all the pieces assigned to him/her from the programme specified below, from his repertoire group ;

– The Final (both rehearsal and concert) will be open to the public ;
– Candidates that didn’t pass the previous phases will have free access to attend the final as public ;

– W.A. Mozart : Don Giovanni: « Crudele !…non mi dir » (Donna Anna)- The final concert is part of the competition. The candidate will be judged according to his performance of both the rehearsal and the concert;
The pieces will be announced by the night before the day of the concert and the candidates will be expected to know every piece from the repertoire;
The winners will be announced in the presence of the public at the end of the final concert.

3. PRIZES

FIRST PRIZE

– € 2000,00

– 2 concerts (1 evening concert and one matineé) March the 8th and March the 9th 2019 at the Opéra de Nice with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice ;

SECOND PRIZE
– 1 concert in 2019/2020 season with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice ;

THIRD PRIZE
– 1 concert in 2019/2020 season with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice ;

SPECIAL PRIZES
– 1 concert in 2020/2021 season of Royal Opera House Muscat (Oman) ;
– 1 concert in 2019 with the Orchestre régional Cannes Provence Côte d’Azur ;
– 1 concert with the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra in Győr (Hungary) ;

To the semi-final and the final stage there will be the attendance of agents from international agencies ;

6. APPLICATION FEE
Application fee for the eliminatory phase is €100 to be paid to the following account or through Paypal.

Candidates admitted to the first round will be requested to pay the participation fee of €250 that has to be paid within July the 31st 2018. The payment has to be made as described above. The application fee is not refundable for any reason except for the cancellation of the competition.

7. COPYRIGHT
The competition is a media event that will be recorded and broadcasted by television and radio. Submitting their application the competitors authorize the organization to the use of their image either through photographs and audio / video that can be broadcasted via radio, television and other media (internet, etc.). Submitting their  application candidates also authorize the organization to use their name and image in printed publications related to the competition. The organization expects that candidates are available for interviews, photo shoots, and any other activity designed to make the competition interesting for the media.

8. FINAL PROVISIONS
For any legal action the Italian text of the announcement must be considered. The competent forum is Genova’s
